Cedarwood is one of today’s essential oils that has been used in various forms for centuries. Egyptians used it for cosmetics, to repel insects as well as in burial and mummification processes. Greeks and Romans enjoyed the soothing fragrance in incense and perfumes. During those times the preferred wood came from the area of Lebanon. Those sources are now greatly diminished and present Cedarwood essential oil comes from Morocco (northern Africa) with a related oil, Juniperus virginiana, coming from North America.
DoTERRA® Cedarwood comes from North America. The oil is steam distilled from the heartwood of the tree and is a base oil high in cedrol. Like the other base note oils Cedarwood has calming and relaxing properties. Cedrol also enhances fibroblast growth in the skin so it is very good for skin issues. This oil can be used aromatically and topically but is not recommended for internal use.
The Clove tree is native to Indonesia and is now grown in a number of tropical cLimes Madegascar being a preferred source. The 20 to 30 foot tree has large leaves and a pink flower. This flower, as a bud, is harvested and dried yielding the common dark reddish brown ‘Clove’ that we are familiar with. The term Clove is thought to come from the Latin word ‘clavus’ which refers to the shape of the Clove resembling a nail. There are multiple essential oils that can be either extracted from the dried bud, from the leaves, or from the stems of the tree. The bud produces the preferred essential oil as the others are very strong and much more prone to skin irritation. DōTerra Clove is distilled from the buds of plants that came from Madagascar.
Historically it has been known and used for millennia because of its antiseptic and analgesic properties. Its traditional uses include preparations for treating colds, digestive disorders, nausea, neuralgia, parasites, shingles, sinusitis, toothache and even a preservative for meat. Ayurvedic, Chinese, western herbalism and even modern dentistry consider Clove to be strongly antiseptic due to its high content of a compound known as eugenol.
The Cypress (cupressaceae family) is a conifer that is found all over the world. The variety used for essential oils commonly comes from southern Europe. The essential oil is extracted from the cones and leaves of the tree. Wikipedia reports this interesting information about these sturdy trees. The most ancient living Cypress is located in Abarkooh, near Shiraz. Its age is estimated to be approximately 4000 years. DōTerra Cypress interestingly come from the Isle of Crete. It is steam distilled from the leaf of the tree.
Because Cypress is such a strong astringent in much of the literature it is recommended for concerns that take advantage of this property. This includes items such as skin care, hemorrhoids, varicose veins and excess perspiration or undesirable odor of the feet. Very well recommended for hemorrhoids using a wash or ointment using a 1 or 2% dilution is suggested. The same ointment can be used for varicose veins applied topically lightly to the area (no massage) with strokes toward the heart. For excess foot perspiration a foot bath again with a 1 or 2% dilution. Some mention Cypress benefiting the symptoms of asthma when diffused properly.
Although Australia typically comes to mind for its wide variety of Eucalyptus trees they are also native to Africa and the southern United States. For essential oils the preferred variety is Eucalyptus radiata. DōTerra Eucalyptus is Eucalyptus Radiata grown in Australia with the oil being extracted from the leaves of the tree. Eucalyptus has long been know by herbal practioners for its insect repellant properties and associated maladies such as fevers and respiratory conditions. Beyond this the antibacterial and antiviral properties make it beneficial in not only treating symptoms but underlying causes as well. As with many oils it can blend with others and the resulting fragrance can add a sense of calming aand well-being which adds a bonus in any health issue.
Fennel has been used for its helpful properties for ages. Anciently it was thought to ward off evil spirits, in Roman times it was a symbol of strength and courage. Additionally even then it was known for its properties to sooth the digestive system and other ailments including curbing the appetite and snake bites. The essential oil is steam distilled from the pulverized seeds (more correctly the fruit) of the Fennel plant. The oil’s aroma is anise-like (or licorice-like) with a sweet pleasant flagrance.
Fennel ingested in a tea, added to water, or in a capsule can be an immediate help for indigestion, constipation, flatulence and other digestive system problems. For chronic digestive concerns add Fennel to the regular use of the TerraZyme supplement for a gentle way to make improvements. Simply add 2 – 3 drops of Fennel to a glass of water and drink daily.
Beyond digestive problems Fennel is an important oil in a number of blends that address a wide range of health concerns including hormonal balance, kidney failure, milk increase, and weight loss. In these cases application can be topical, with massage, and/or in baths.
Grapefruit is a flavorful and refreshing oil that aids the immune system, lymphatic systems, and is very powerful as an antidepressant. It will also freshen breath, heal inflamed gums. Because it is a strong disinfectant, it is very effective as a cleaning spray or as fruit and vegetable wash. Some have used Grapefruit for a scalp treatment others have had success using Grapefruit in a weight loss program. It is good treating the symptoms of colds and flu. Finally, Grapefruit is used for skin treatment, especially for treating aging or loose skin. DōTerra Grapefruit Essential Oil is of the botanical family Rutaceae, expressed from the peel of the fruit which is grown in the United States.
Mix 3-5 drops with water or juice, then drink (2-3) times per day to aid diarrhea or allergies. Mix and gargle or oil-pull 2-4 in a tablespoon of carrier or ¼ of water freshening breath or gum irritations. Use in a lymphatic massage for lymph node stimulation and detoxifying – especially at the onset of cold or flu symptoms. Mix 2%-5% with shampoo or conditioner for scalp problems or dandruff. Leave in hair for 10 min. Add several drops to a large bowl or sink of water and wash fruits or vegetables. Make a spritz and use on bed sheets, in cars, or on meat before refrigerating to kill bacteria, virus, or fungus. Diffusing can also build immune system and kill pathogens. Put a few drops in a cup of water and leave the toothbrush in overnight to disinfect. Use to disinfect cutting boards or kitchen surfaces. Use a tissue cup for inhaling (3 X – deeply) prior to meals to inhibit appetite. Use topically, diluted 5%-10% for skin conditioning.
Lemon trees were first cultivated in China, then to southern Europe, and finally made their way to the Americas as early as the arrival of Columbus in the 1400s. The fruit has long been associated with freshness and cleanliness and now its aroma is advertised by many products with terms like ‘Lemon scented’ to entice buyers. Many essential oils are produced by distillation but Lemon and other citrus oils come from cold pressing the peel under great pressure. This eliminates the use of any heat and thereby preserves the delicacy of the natural essence. Italy is one of the best sources for the essential oil, Lemon.

Lemongrass has a sweeter, more powerful citrus aroma than Lemon. It is an effective pain killer. It has been proven to lower cholesterol. Many find its warming qualities beneficial for arthritic pain and rheumatism. Some have found it effective in treating colds and flu. DōTerra Rosemary Essential Oil if from the botanical family Lamiaceae (Labiatae) grown in Morocco and steam distilled from the leaf of the plant.
Use compresses and baths when trying to sooth stiff joints, arthritis, or rheumatism. Use diffusion or other methods of inhalation when treating colds, flu, and as a mind stimulant. Rosemary is certified as GRAS by the FDA and can be taken internally. Rosemary has had positive effects being applied neat or with a carrier to the scalp, face, or neck for skin or hair/scalp disorders.
Lime essential oil comes from the fruit of the common citrus tree. It can be either steam processed or cold pressed to produce the essential oil. The former produces a clear oil and in the heating process an important constituent (furocoumarin) is destroyed. DoTerra uses oils that are cold pressed producing a Lime colored essential oil wherein the furocoumarins are preserved. Wild Orange offers one of the most dynamic fragrances of essential oils. The combined, proven antifungal, antibacterial, and antidepressant properties make it one of the most powerful and aromatic oils to use. It is excellent for disinfecting and killing fungus and pathogens, while relieving stress. It can be both energizing and uplifting, while being sedative by instilling feelings of peace.It is used in the treatment of anorexia, and has been used as an anti-cancer agent. It is highly recommended for use during the early stages of cold and flu. DōTerra Wild Orange, is of the botanical family Rutaceae, grown in the Dominican Republic, with the oil expressed from the peel of the fruit.
Wintergreen is an aromatic stimulant that has a familiar aroma that many will recognize from Ben-Gay or similar muscle pain relievers. The commonality is methyl salicylate that is a chemically synthesized ingredient in popular muscle pain relieving medications and a natural ingredient that makes up almost the entirety of Wintergreen oil (Gaultheria procumbens). It has also been used for some respiratory conditions. Minorities of people have found its analgesic properties mildly helpful against headaches.
